The Last Snow: Why March Is One of the Most Magical Months in the Catskills

There is a quiet moment in the Catskills that happens every year — usually in early March — when winter hasn’t quite left, but spring is starting to whisper its arrival.

The snow still blankets the mountains. Ski trails are open. Cabin fireplaces are still glowing in the evenings. But the sunlight lingers longer each day, and the pace of the mountains begins to shift.

For travelers who love peaceful escapes, March might just be the most underrated month to visit the Catskills.

Late-Season Skiing Without the Crowds

Many people assume ski season ends in February, but the Catskills often deliver excellent skiing conditions well into March. The difference is that the crowds have thinned out.

That means shorter lift lines, quieter lodges, and a much more relaxed experience on the mountain.

One of the region’s favorite ski spots is Plattekill Mountain, known for its scenic views and friendly, local atmosphere. Late winter weekends here often feel like a well-kept secret.

Another great option nearby is Belleayre Mountain, a larger mountain offering a wide variety of trails, scenic gondola rides, and well-groomed slopes that make it especially popular with families and intermediate skiers. Belleayre is also open during the week when many short term rentals have discounted nightly stays.

For visitors who enjoy tubing, fat biking, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, Bearpen Mountain Sports is a hidden gem. Their trail network winds through beautiful forests and rolling terrain, offering a peaceful way to experience the mountains beyond the ski lifts.

After a morning on the slopes, many visitors head back to their cabins for a late lunch, a nap by the fire, or a walk through nearby towns like Andes or Margaretville.

The Perfect Month for Cozy Cabin Escapes

March is still very much cabin season.

Guests spend their mornings with coffee overlooking snowy fields, afternoons exploring small towns or hiking quiet trails, and evenings around the fire pit or fireplace.

Some of our favorite simple March moments include:

  • Coffee on a snowy deck as the sun rises over the mountains

  • Board games or puzzles after a ski day

  • Cooking a big dinner together in a farmhouse kitchen

  • Watching the snow fall outside while staying warm inside

This slower pace is exactly what many visitors come to the Catskills for.

The Calm Before Spring

Another reason March is so special is that it sits between two busy travel seasons. The holiday rush is over, and the spring hiking season hasn’t fully begun yet. That makes March a perfect time for travelers who prefer a quieter experience. Local shops, cafés, and restaurants are still open, but the atmosphere feels relaxed and unhurried.

It’s the Catskills at its most authentic.

A Smart Time to Plan Your Next Visit

March is also when many travelers start thinking about their upcoming spring and summer trips.

Families begin planning spring break getaways. Hiking season starts to appear on the horizon. And visitors who fall in love with the region often begin exploring second-home possibilities. For anyone considering spending more time in the Catskills — whether for travel or investment — early spring is when those conversations tend to begin.

But for now, March is simply about enjoying the last beautiful moments of winter. And in the Catskills, those moments are something special.
